Războiul cibernetic (cyberwarfare) este un atac cibernetic sau o serie de atacuri care vizează o țară, cu posibile urmări distructive asupra infrastructurii guvernamentale, civile și critice, putând duce chiar la pierderi de vieți omenești.
Războiul cibernetic implică în mod obișnuit un stat care comite atacuri cibernetice asupra altuia, dar, în unele cazuri, atacurile sunt efectuate de organizații teroriste sau de actori non-statali.
Principalele tipuri de atacuri într-un război cibernetic includ:
- Propaganda cu știri false în mediul online;
- Atacul asupra rețelei de energie electrică ce duce la dezactivarea sistemelor critice;
- Spionajul prin tehnici de tip spear phishing si botnets;
- Atacul de tip Denial-of-service (DoS) ce duce la perturbarea operațiunilor și sistemelor critice prin blocarea accesului la site-uri web importante atât pentru civili, cât și pentru personalul militar și de securitate.
