Pe baza interacțiunilor anterioare (click-uri, like-uri, share-uri) și a anumitor caracteristici sociodemografice, algoritmul Facebook oferă utilizatorilor știri, reclame și recomandări personalizate, menite să crească timpul petrecut de aceștia pe platformă. Această hiper-personalizare, realizată mai ales cu ajutorul algoritmilor, a determinat apariția bulelor informaționale (filter bubbles), care alimentează, practic, convingerile preexistente ale oamenilor. Pentru a evidenția cum diferă newsfeed-urile utilizatorilor de Facebook în funcție de caracteristicile personale și de interacțiunile digitale anterioare, a fost lansat proiectul Split Screen, a cărui principală concluzie, susținută și de alte studii, este că platformele digitale contribuie la adâncirea diviziunilor sociale, alimentând polarizarea. În acest context, apare întrebarea firească: cum putem să ieșim din aceste bule informaționale? Una dintre soluții este să devenim conștienți de eventualele pericole care apar în procesul de informare (de exemplu, să conștientizăm prezența algoritmilor pe care noi înșine îi antrenăm să ne ofere anumite recomandări). O alta este să ne diversificăm dieta informațională, adică să încercăm să căutăm informații din surse diferite (regionale/ internaționale, nu doar locale) și, eventual, în formate diferite (audio/ video/ audio-video, nu doar text). O altă sugestie este să căutăm în mod constant diferite puncte de vedere asupra unui subiect despre care ne informăm.
